Did you know February, named after the Latin word februum, means purification? I’m reminded of the Coalition’s work to keep our shared air, water and food healthy.
If you are a follower of our Dark Skies Initiative, you might also find interesting that the February Full Moon is named after the snow on the ground. This year, the Snow Moon (tonight) is also a Super Moon, which means the Moon is near its closest approach to Earth.

To the right is a photo of dill and cilantro I’ve grown through my frosty Oak View winter from saved seeds! I would never have thought to have these two herbs in my salad in February.

Annual Seed & Plant Swap ~ Saturday, February 23
Look around for a place to sow a few seeds. Henry Van Dyke
Come give and/or get seeds, cuttings and plants for free from hobbyists and professionals. Our food security is supported through local seed sovereignty. Sharing in the seed commons is a historical act of community solidarity.
While you could easily score a hundred dollars worth of free seed, the knowledge of what to do with those seeds, freely shared by experienced gardeners and farmers is priceless.
Open to all, this is an especially rich community event consistently scoring a “10” on the community vibrancy scale.
$5 donation request at the door to support your hosts and you’ll be entered to win a door prize.

The Dirt on the Community Demonstration Garden
The Coalition in collaboration with the City of Ojai is revitalizing the City owned Community Demonstration Garden behind City Hall as a model example of Water-wise landscape design. Upcoming line-up:
Feb. 25, Community Design Input, 4-6pm, OVGC Resource Center This is our garden and it needs our attention! We will workshop ideas for an overall proposal to the City of Ojai.
March 2, Community Potluck & Workday, 10am-3pm, at the Garden. Come for the food, fun and fellowship. Stay to help prune, weed, repair and organize. . .
We are excited to announce that the Coalition will again be hosting Ojai Earth Day on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 11am-4pm at Libbey Park in downtown Ojai. This beautiful setting is ideal for continuing the conversation about creating a sustainable, climate resilient Ojai Valley. Like last year, there will be a variety of interactive activities, demonstrations, dynamic speakers, talented performers, and Earth-conscious exhibitors. This highly publicized and popular event is free to the public.
By recognizing the true costs of a wildfire, we can begin to see the much larger issues that adversely affect the entire community. While the majority of fire suppression costs are reimbursed via federal/state sources, the community must rebuild itself physically and mentally.
This panel, with representatives from government, fire safety, the forest service, and others will discuss a community wildfire strategy to help minimize the affects of the next wildfire. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when the next wildland fire hits Ojai.
The BUZZ* is a placeholder for us to casually network together and, like pollinators, share the energy and nectar that motivates and informs our journey as individuals and as a community to actively design a sustainable, resilient and regenerative future.
