Dec. 3rd - Creek Habitat Restoration Tour and Workday

Join members of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition in Libbey Park on Saturday, December 3 for a Creek Habitat Restoration Tour and Workday. If there is enough interest, project leader and biologist, Brian Holly, will lead a tour of our restoration work and then help is needed to remove debris and vegetation in a new section of creek.

The workday will begin at 9:30 a.m. and go to 1 p.m., rain or shine. Volunteers will meet at the Libbey Park lower parking lot on Montgomery Street by the lower tennis courts. Wear sturdy work shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring gloves and a shovel or pitch fork. Snacks and water will be available.

This phase of the OVGC creek habitat restoration work is funded by a U.S. Fish & Wildlife grant.

Dec 13th - Ojai Valley-Wide Meeting About Water Quality

The Coalition will be hosting an Ojai Valley-wide meeting about new water quality standards and local options to protect water quality on December 13, 2011. The meeting will be led by the Regional Water Quality Control Board, with local input from the Resource Conservation District and the Waste to Energy bio-digester project.

The public is invited to attend Tuesday, December 13 at the Chaparral High School Auditorium, 414 East Ojai Avenue from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. free of charge. The new standards are being developed because of increased levels of plant nutrients (mainly nitrates) in the groundwater and in the creeks of the Ventura River watershed. High concentrations of nitrates cause more frequent algae blooms in some reaches of the Ventura River, which diminish aquatic life and recreational esthetics of the river. High nitrate concentrations have been found in surface flows of San Antonio Creek, and in some wells that require treatment or blending to meet drinking water standards.

Nov. 18 Community Gathering and Harvest Feast

Come share and celebrate the bounty of our Valley with a potluck dinner and conversation surrounding ‘The Frontlines of the Good Food Movement’ with documentary film producer and food activist Dulanie Ellis on Friday, November 18th. Dulanie, co-chair of the Ojai Valley Green Coaliton Food Council, will also preview a sampling of her feature documentary (currently in production), "FARMY: An Army of Farmers," that chronicles the emerging social movement of combat veterans who are becoming organic farmers and ranchers.

Hosted by the Coalition at the Chaparral Auditorium at 414 E. Ojai Ave., there will be a meet and greet from 6:30 p.m.to 7:00 p.m., followed by food sharing from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., finishing with Dulanie’s talk and film screening 8:00 p.m.to 9:00 p.m.

OVGC members should prepare vegetarian dishes and feature local, organic ingredients, as much as possible.

Here’s how it works –

* If your last name begins with A-J, please bring a main dish for 8
* If last name starts with K-R, please bring a salad or side dish for 8 (no chips, please
* If last name starts with S-Z, bring dessert or appetizer for 8

To keep our event ‘green’ also bring your own place setting (plate, silverware, and mug).

Coalition Begins Fall and Winter Creek Habitat Restoration Work

If you are a new OVGC member, we have been leading an ongoing creek riparian habitat restoration project since November 2009 that began in Ojai Creek inside Libbey Park near Ojai Avenue.

Two volunteer work days are coming up November 19 and December 3, with more in February-March 2012. On the 19th, we will finish up mulching and do planting in Ojai Creek. In December we will move over to the Fox Canyon Barranca to clean out brush, debris and trash. If you are as excited about this project as we are, we invite you to participate. The work days are from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. We meet above the Libbey Park lower tennis courts, up the stairs off the Libbey Park Montgomery St. parking lot before proceeding to the location of the day.
