California Coastal/Creek Cleanup Day (CCD) is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. The mission of CCD is to engage people to remove debris from our beaches and waterways; to identify the sources of marine debris; and ultimately to change the behaviors that cause pollution.
In Ventura County 2010, 3,129 volunteers cleaned up miles of beaches and inland waterways, removing 13,812 pounds of trash and recyclables! Statewide, the event grew by 2,000 volunteers, bringing out more than 80,000 volunteers who collected 1.2 million pounds of debris. In addition, CCD is part of International Coastal Cleanup, which included almost 500,000 volunteers in 108 countries and 45 U.S. states, in 2009. In total, volunteers collected more than 7.4 million pounds of debris. Volunteers not only cleaned up trash, they recorded 10.3 million items from cigarette butts to fast food wrappers to cast-off appliances helping to provide a global snapshot of marine debris around the world.
