On July 9 the OVGC Culinary Club held a canning class teaching the art of making ‘sugarless’ jam. Cecil and Sue Baumgartner of Thunderbird Farms generously opened up their home for us and we canned many jars of apricot jam. The class maxed out and had a long waiting list.
Cecil, who teaches middle school, was a natural and it was definitely a hands on class.
We learned how to pick the fruit and then helped cut, stir, jar and everything in between.
The Ojai Valley Green Coalition encourages you to stop by Thunderbird Farms at the Sunday Farmers Market and say "Hi." We plan to collaborate with Cecil and Sue on a regular basis – learning how to can, prune, and companion plant to name a few. Stay tuned!
